Designed by architect William Preston, this elegant home blends Prairie and Spanish Colonial Revival styles. In 1928, the Swensons added brick veneer, a grape arbor, clay-tile roofing, and decorative touches that made the home even more unique.

Originally part of a vast 58-acre ranch, the estate has since been reduced to a beautifully preserved two-acre city block. Today, it is owned by the Swenson House Historical Society and managed alongside the Abilene Preservation League. The property is open for guided tours, special events, and community gatherings.

History & Legacy

William Swenson was a well-known banker and civic leader—president of Citizens National Bank, Abilene Light, the Abilene Ice Company, and a director of several railroads. He and his wife raised four children in this grand home. After William’s passing in 1967 and Shirley’s in 1974, the family kept the house in excellent shape until they transferred ownership to the Abilene Preservation League in the late 1980s.

Today, the Swenson House Historical Society offers public tours for $10 per person (please call ahead at 325-232-8454). The house also serves as a charming venue for weddings, afternoon teas, and seasonal events such as Christmas at the Swenson and Haunted Abilene in October.
